- Q. Where can I find information about program requirements and courses?
-
A. The Faculty of Graduate Studies Calender (link) provides the official requirements that govern your program. See page 59 for requirements and course listing specific to Biological Sciences students.
Q. What type of graduate degrees
does the Biological Sciences Department offer?
-
A. We offer thesis (research)
based M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in four integrated areas:
Biochemistry
Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
Cell Development and Physiology
Microbiology
Once an applicant has been accepted
into a M.Sc. or Ph.D. program, a more detailed area of specialization
is determined.
Q. What are the requirements for admission
into a graduate program?
A. In addition to the
Faculty of Graduate Studies requirements (link),
the Department requires:
- An admission grade point average of
3.20 or higher (on the University of Calgary four-point system).
For M.Sc. admission this is based on the last two
years of the undergraduate degree consisting of a minimum of
10 full-course equivalents. For Ph.D. admission (with
an M.Sc.), the overall GPA from the M.Sc. will be considered.
- Proficiency in the English language
is essential for the pursuit and successful completion of graduate
programs at the University of Calgary. Prior to admission to
the Faculty of Graduate Studies, an applicant whose primary
language is not English must fulfill the English language proficiency
requirement in one of the following two ways:
- By writing the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and obtaining a score of at least 580 (written test) or 92 (Internet-based test). For further information on the TOEFL exam, please view the following web address: http://www.toefl.com
- By writing the International English
Language Testing System (IELTS) examination and obtaining
a minimum score of 7.5. Further information can be obtained
from the following web address: http://www.ielts.ca/
*If all of the above requirements
are met, your completed application will be forwarded to
potential supervisors to determine if a supervisor is available
for your M.Sc. or Ph.D. program. Because of limited space
and funding, supervisors are not always able to accept
all qualified applicants.
Q. How long will it take to complete
my graduate degree?
A. The maximum allowable
time to complete a M.Sc. degree is four years, although normal
expectations are that all degree requirements will be completed
within 1.5 to 3 years.
The maximum allowable time to complete
a Ph.D. degree is six years, although normal expectations
are that all degree requirements will be completed within
three to four years.
Q. How do I apply for Graduate Studies
in the Department of Biological Sciences?
A. The first step is to
determine if there is a faculty member whose research interests
are similar to your own. You can view the Departmental Research
List by clicking the researchers page.
If there is a faculty member you would
like to work with, we recommend that you first contact him/her
directly to determine if she/he will be accepting any new
M.Sc. or Ph.D. students in the term in which you wish to
start. If you receive a positive response, you may
complete an online graduate application. Please note that
a positive response is not a guarantee of admission.

being undertaken in the Department of Biological Sciences?
